Have to go with Banana_Science on this.
Have tried a few of the other slicers, and survived quite well on an alternating diet of FlashPrint and Slic3r (I personally had less issues with FPrint).
However, despite Simplify3D being expensive, it works really well for me, and you can tweak almost anything (from what I've seen so far).

AutoDesk has their 'freebie' PrintStudio that I got access to when downloading Fusion360 (free for hobby and limited business use) it might be worth you trying before parting with real cash: https://support.ember.autodesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/212823998-Install-Print-Studio (It is part of the Ember 3D-Printer package 'Spark' (until Jan15, 2017), then Spark is shutting down. I suspect the PrintStudio might continue as an add-on to other AutoDesk products as it is being mentioned as a new feature in these products:- AutoCAD, Inventor, etc).
Graphic design apps for microsoft. I have a very extensive library of textures, images, patterns, icons etc. Like previous commenters noted, not all of these apps are for designers only and I think it would be helpful to divide the list in two – dektop apps and webbased apps.No matter though, I am sure that beginning designers will find some useful stuff in this list.A few more suggestions:Contrast-A An app to check the contrast between different colors. Not the most exciting app maybe but vital for checking that your designs are accesible and usable.Lyn A a lightweight and fast image browser and viewer. And Lyn allows me to browse through these with lightning speed.Kuler desktop Adobes excellent color utilityBrushViewQL A QuickLook plugin for Photoshop Brush Files.

Personally, I have not regretted the purchase of Simplify3D, I'd love it to be cheaper, but as Banana_Science says, it 'is totally worth it.'
Good luck,
