Apr 01, 2016  Can we talk about how insanely great (yeah, I went there) True Tone is? I had to switch to my MacBook Pro/iPhone every few minutes during the setup process of my new iPad Pro to get two-factor authentication codes, and holy cow is it a major difference. I didn't realize just how stark all of the displays around me are until now. Jul 13, 2018  We learned yesterday that the 2018 MacBook Pros include Apple’s True Tone technology. What we didn’t know was that apparently this will also extend to Apple’s Thunderbolt Display, and the LG UltraFine 4K and 5K displays when plugged into the notebooks as well.

The True Tone technology in Mac computers and Apple Pro Display XDR uses advanced multichannel sensors to adjust the color and intensity of your display and Touch Bar to match the ambient light so that images appear more natural.

True Tone can also adjust these external displays when they're connected to your Mac notebook with its lid open:

  • Apple Thunderbolt Display, using the Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 adapter

True Tone also works on Apple Pro Display XDR using its built-in ambient light sensors. You can use True Tone on Pro Display XDR with any compatible Mac computer.
