Zhejiang Dahua Technology Co., Ltd. is a Chinese manufacturer, Lorex is 100% owned by this Chinese manufacturer. Lorex “sells”, or as our government is calling it, “dumping” low cost equipment directly into the US market. Because Lorex is located in Canada, Lorex allows this Chinese manufacturer to mask themselves as a western based company and completely bypass import tariffs targeting China manufacturers. 100% of your investment is sent directly out of the country benefiting the marketing people in Canada and this Chinese company; a 100% transfer of American dollars.
Where’s the support?
Lorex will not disclose where their support is located but it is not in the USA, we suspect Singapore or India. Take the time to call them, when we called, their support did not answer. On the second call they were unable to answer even basic technical questions. Let us know if you received better support than we experienced, and we will reconsider this post.

Why is the Lorex price so low?
First because they have no physical USA presence, but we already discussed that. The other reason is CONSUMER vs. PROFESSIONAL. 'Consumer Grade' products first target a price point, then they are design to fit that price. Low price is king with Consumer Grade and quality usually comes in a distant second. Suppliers of this type of equipment include Amazon, Lorex, Q-See, Night Owl, Montavue, On-Point, etc.
Reality is when it comes to video surveillance you get what you pay for. Low price is just low price, but 'value' is quality at a low price. Backstreet Surveillance offers 'value'. You will search for days to find a professional security dealer offering Lorex. Why? You would think if they are low cost and quality, a security dealer would be interested in selling Lorex. But they don’t! Because it’s not the level of quality or performance a customer expects from a security dealer.
Professional Grade equipment is what Backstreet offers. Our products are designed for performance and the price is based on the electronics required to provide that performance. In other words quality comes first. Because quality comes first our products are superior allowing us to offer the industry’s longest warranty, 5 years. Why are Lorex/Dahua/Hikvision cameras banned from US Government buildings and facilities?
Hidden backdoor access was found in the cameras they were selling into the USA. This security breach allows any “bad actor” to access the cameras video feed with the owner completely unaware, not a lapse in trust our government was willing to accept. Our Government acted and congress passed the 2019 NDAA into law. The law bans all equipment from these suppliers from being installed in US government facilities. This may not concern the average consumer, but you must ask yourself; should we be supporting, encouraging and “buying” such intentional insidious behavior?
This issue dose not phase many consumers. They buy knowing they might be spied on. But as a security consultant I have to ask myself why the suppliers would take such a risk with their market, allowing their products to be intentionally compromised? What was the benefit for them? When you ask that question the issue becomes sobering. It was not there for the benefit of the consumer that's for sure.

The only downside for this software is that it is no longer being updated since development has stopped. But it works perfectly with all OS versions that released before 2014.

Sentry Vision can remote control the software. You can issue commands to a listening Gmail account. You can also hide the program so that other users don’t know that the webcam is being monitored. There is a password protect function too that can be activated.
3. ContaCam
This is another free video surveillance system. It has all the necessary features to turn your computer into a CCTV system, and you can specify a range of time per frame per day for motion detection recording.It is rare for a surveillance software to use SWF format to save record, but ContaCam does it. You can change these settings however in the Movement Detection tab in ‘Device Settings’.
4. iSpy
This is open source camera security software. iSpy comes with a large list of features that include audio monitoring – something rarely found in video surveillance.There are many settings where iSpy can be used because of its comprehensive set of features – baby monitoring, monitoring pets or nannies, etc.
There are som features like remote access streaming and email alerts that are available only for paid users. You are often also required to sign up for a free iSpy account to play your recordings.
5. Cam Wizard
It doesn’t matter whether you have an IP camera or an USB camera; this software can be used for both. Although it offers some resistance in the beginning, once you set up, it works smoothly and offers the features that other software provides.
The interface looks rather classic and is easy enough o navigate, though. You get the remote sensing function and can load all your recording to your email account to view later.
8. Sighthound Video

The actions can easily be configured from the flexible rules editor, and it comes with the remote access options you can turn off or turn on your computer and view your recording.
The interface is user-friendly, but it runs multiple processes at once that take up a lot of memory. There is a free version of the software available for limited low-resolution recordings.

This software comes with a basic motion detection module that can automatically record both video and audio when motion is detected. You can set the motion sensitivity and maximum recording duration, timestamp your recorded videos and schedule your recording audio with motion capture.It offers live monitoring and remote control functions via the network.
