Apple has added a new GPU configuration option for its Mac Pro desktop tower: AMD's Radeon Pro 5500X. It's a mid-range pick amid the other configurations available on this machine.

The W5500X adds $200 over the base config (which has the Radeon Pro 580X, the same found in some high-end iMacs) and comes with 8GB of GDDR6 memory. Other options include the Radeon Pro W5700X ($600 more than the base config), the Radeon Pro Vega II ($2,400), and the Radeon Pro Vega II Duo ($5,200), as well as dual-GPU variants of the W5700X, Radeon Pro Vega II, and Radeon Pro Vega II Duo configurations.Mac

MacOS does not have Radeon Settings/Catalyst as Windows does. Apple publishes their own drivers through system updates. While Nvidia does offer their own Mac drivers, they often lag far behind the PC counterparts and don't seem to offer any sort of Wattman-equivalent for changing clock speeds.

This is the copy Apple provides to explain the W5500X to potential buyers:

The AMD Radeon Pro W5500X with 8GB of GDDR6 memory is based on AMD’s RDNA architecture, featuring up to 5.6 teraflops of single-precision performance or 11.2 teraflops of half-precision computing. It supports up to four 4K displays, one 5K display, or one Pro Display XDR. The half-height MPX Module design fits in either MPX bay and enables an additional PCIe slot for additional expansion. And up to two Radeon Pro W5500X MPX Modules can be installed in Mac Pro, one in each MPX bay.

The W5500X is a lower-cost alternative to the W5700X, which itself was only recently added as an option—just this April, in fact. A key difference between the two is memory bandwidth: the 8GB W5500X offers 224GB/s whereas the 16GB W5700X offers 448GB/s. Additionally, the W5500X has 24 compute units and 1,536 stream processors, while the W5700X offers much more bang at 40 CUs and 2,560 stream processors. It's a big difference in performance and a modest difference in price.

Here are the specs Apple lists for the W5500X:

  • 24 compute units, 1,536 stream processors
  • 8GB of GDDR6 memory with 224GB/s memory bandwidth
  • Up to 5.6 teraflops single precision or 11.2 teraflops half precision
  • Two HDMI 2.0 ports on card
  • Two DisplayPort connections routed to system to support internal Thunderbolt 3 ports
  • Support for up to four 4K displays, one 5K display, or one Pro Display XDR
  • Half-height MPX Module fills an MPX bay and uses extra power and PCIe bandwidth

The W5500X is also available as an MPX module for $600, so users who already have a Mac Pro can add this GPU that way.

If you build a system using a Radeon Pro workstation GPU then gaming likely isn't part of the decision-making process, but that doesn't mean you can't game on it. AMD makes it fairly easy to use either professional or gaming-focused drivers.

How to install gaming drivers on a Radeon Pro GPU

It's arguable how much difference changing the drivers actually makes to in-game performance, but there's more to it than that in this case. AMD's Adrenalin drivers contain optimizations for games, while the Pro drivers contain optimizations for graphics and compute programs used in the professional space. Adrenalin is also much easier to tweak for gaming-related settings than its professional counterpart.

Whichever GPU you have from the Radeon Pro range, you can simply download the Adrenalin gaming drivers instead of the Radeon Pro alternatives.

  1. Visit the AMD drivers and support page. From there select your hardware from the checkboxes.
  2. Go to professional graphics and click Radeon Pro
  3. Select either the GPU series depending on your specific graphics card.
  4. Then find the specific model, for example, the WX 2100.

You're then presented with two downloads for your GPU. The top one will always be the most current release of the Radeon Pro software, but beneath it you'll find the latest Radeon Adrenalin software to download. Simply click download, and a .exe file will save to your PC to open and install. The installer will do all of the work for you — you just have to follow the on-screen prompts.

Once it's finished you'll be prompted to restart and when you do, you'll have the gaming drivers and the standard Radeon Settings app over the blue-themed Radeon Pro. The options within each are different, but both support a version of AMD ReLive. Adrenalin should be better if you intend to game a lot, though, and it's not as if any professional applications you use with your GPU will suddenly fall apart.

Even easier on some GPUs is being able to switch from the Pro to the Adrenalin drivers on the fly from within the Radeon Pro settings app. It isn't supported on all Radeon Pro GPUs, for example, our entry level WX 2100 doesn't have the feature, but some of the higher-end GPUs do.

Those that do have a driver options tab along the bottom of the Radeon Pro settings application. In here is a simple dropdown box that enables you to switch to and install the latest Adrenalin gaming drivers. If you need to go back to the Radeon Pro drivers, there's a similar option in Adrenalin that will let you do just that.

What Is Amd Radeon Software

Workstation GPUs are traditionally very expensive, but there's still a healthy market, and a GPU optimized for professional applications will still perform better than a gaming GPU without those same optimizations. AMD's Radeon Pro lineup has something for all budgets, including the WX 2100, its entry-level product.

It supports both Radeon Pro and Adrenalin drivers, costs comfortably under $150, has a low-profile form factor to fit inside smaller workstations, and it doesn't need any external power connectors.
