Second monitor didn't work. It is an OLD 12 inch flat screen connected with a VGA to Thunderbolt adaptor. Maybe needs a driver to work?

First, make sure that your system is 'seeing' the external display. Hold down the option key, go to the Apple menu and choose System Information.
Then click Graphics/Displays. Does the external monitor appear there, together with the internal one? If it does not, then maybe there is a cable problem.
If it does appear, and yet it shows no image, maybe your mac is outputting at a resolution or refresh rate that the old display does not support.
Open System Preferences/Displays. Hold down the option key and then click on 'Detect Displays'.
