Well, the only idea that comes to my mind is the following:Run Software update and write down (or make a screenshot) of every update mentioned including the version number. I was obviously having a 'duh' moment - I was on my laptop last night when I sent the post with the versions I have installed (and I hadn't run Software update on it, but on my iMac). Restart computer and run Software update again (a new.plist is created automatically) to see if that cured the problem. You can copy your iPod or iOS Device Contacts anywhere on your hard drive, preferably to a separate Contacts folder which you can create yourself.
